Palmetto
“Picked in the heat of Summer from a tiny island bristling with these little palms, I could not forget as I drew the graceful fronds, the sound of cicadas and the scuttling of beetles through the dry branches. Following the strong but elegant lines as they spread into their perfect fan, I remembered with hope “Justus ut palma florebit...”
One in a series of four prints, tracing the life of native flora from seed or root to flower. Each painting is a study of a branch or bloom suspended in time - drawn from life and captured quickly before its vivifying force withers and deadens. Transparent watercolor washes reflect the exquisite palette and form of each flower.
